Ginny under sail Ginny

In recent years the
Calkins 50, Ginny,
has been a familiar
sight at our yard.

The owner, now in
his 80’s has had
great fun upgrading
her for local races.
The projects have
been large and small
but all have had the
similar goal of making
Ginny lighter, stiffer
and faster under sail.
Ginny dockside
interior with extra bunk stowed Eric Jespersen and several
of the shop crew have raced aboard her as she has
become a spirited
performer in the Pacific Northwest PHRF
handicap races.
Some of the work
undertaken has
included repairing
all frames and floors
in the center of the
boat, which along
with a new plywood
skin spanning the
keelson in this area
has significantly
strengthened her
amidships.

A new keel was poured to an existing Davidson design and bolted in place. A lighter engine
with new exhaust system was installed. Neither would have been possible without the
structural work. A new spade rudder and rig configuration, also to Davidson’s design, were
built. New chain plates and strengthened mast step supported the rig changes and sail improvements. Early in our relationship new cockpit seats, lockers and gutters were built.
A new stove and table were installed in the galley. A carbon fibre radar mast and up to date navigation equipment are other tasks completed.
